If you are a fan of Chinese food, you must have heard people advising you not to overeat.  The biggest reason for this is the presence of a salt-like element called Ajinomoto.  This element is the essence of Chinese cuisine, as it not only adds flavor, but also aroma.

Technically, ajinomoto is a compound composed of sodium and glutamic acid, and prepared from ingredients such as beet, sugarcane, corn or cassava.  It is a naturally occurring amino acid, and is commonly used in Asian food such as noodles, soups, fried rice, etc.

Talking about the nutritional value of Ajinomoto, according to celebrity nutritionist Manisha Chopra, 1000 grams of this substance contains 12,300 mg sodium, 21.2 mg calcium and 0.4 mg iron.  This means that there are no vitamins, proteins, fats, etc. in it.

 So is Ajinomoto healthy?

Ajinomoto is safe to use in moderation, but excessive use can be harmful to the body.  Indeed, glutamic acid acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain, so many people believe that ajinomoto is harmful.

 Is Ajinimoto Healthy for You?

This is because while glutamate can be a toxin to your body, it can also destroy nerve cells.  But there are no studies that support this.

Ajinomoto enhances the taste of the food and harmonizes all the other tastes in the food to give a balanced and rich taste.  People also use it in place of table salt, because the amount of sodium in it is very less.

Here are some harmful effects of Ajinomoto –

Consumption of Ajinomoto can cause sweating problem.

Its consumption can cause fatigue due to dehydration in the body.

Too much sodium in the body can cause joint and muscle pain.

It can also cause a burning sensation in the stomach for some people.  Other stomach related problems like acidity, acid reflux etc can also make things worse.

Eating more ajinomoto can also cause fluctuations in blood pressure.  Migraine or severe headache is also seen in people who consume Ajinomoto in excess.

Pregnant women should not consume Ajinomoto.

The monosodium glutamate present in it can cause breathing problems while sleeping.  This can also cause you to snore a lot.

And shockingly, a study published in the journal Comprehensive Review in Food Science and Food Safety suggests that it may also be a cancer-causing agent.  Studies show that consuming too much of Ajinomoto can cause cancer cells to regenerate and also cause colorectal cancer.

 Conclusion

According to nutritionists, 0.5 grams of Ajinomoto is a safe limit in a meal.  It can be included in any meal.

It is important to note that pregnant women as well as those who are sensitive to Ajinomoto should avoid it completely.  It is neither good for them nor for their child.
