Whenever we lose our phone, we get upset.  The first thing to do when your smartphone is lost or stolen is to protect your personal information instead of worrying about it.  People often lose their phones and most of our personal information is hidden in our smartphones.

So do not worry and follow these steps to avoid such dangers.

 1. Call your number immediately

The first thing to do in case of loss of phone is to call your number.  It is also possible that your phone may not have been lost but it was missed at a store or replaced with another phone.  If your phone is not on silent mode then you can hear its sound and find it.

If the phone has really fallen somewhere, the person who has got the device can immediately pick up the call after seeing it.  If the phone rings and someone picks up it is safe but if the number is off then you will need bigger help.

 2. Lock down your phone immediately

Android and iOS users are always advised to lock their phones with pattern, face-unlock, fingerprint, voice-recognition lock or password etc.  But you can also remotely lock your iPhone so that no one can access your personal information.  You can turn on Activate Lost Mode on your iPhone by logging into a different device and logging into your Apple account and clicking on the Find My iPhone option.

If you are an Android device owner, you can use the Android Device Manager and use the Find My Devikar option to find the last location of your device, which will require a Google ID.  Here you get the option to secure the device which starts displaying the message on the smartphone.  You can also remotely erase your devikar with Android Find My Devikar.

 3. Track the phone with the help of GPS

If calling does not work, then lock the phone with the help of GPS.  However, this method will not work if you have not already turned on your phone's GPS.  Your Android device comes with an in-built location tracking service that monitors the activity of your mobile phone.  You can log in to another device with the help of a Google account and track the current location of the phone by going to Google Location History.

 4. Remotely Erase All Data

If the above mentioned methods are not enough then the person who has your phone may have removed the phone battery and SIM card from the phone.  You can try erasing data from your Google Account or iCloud, but that won't allow you to track your device.  But if you backed up your data before you lost the phone, you can restore it later.

 5. File a police complaint about theft or loss of your phone

If you feel that your phone is not lost but stolen, then report it to the police as soon as possible.  This may reduce your chances of getting your phone, but its reference number can still help in getting insurance.  You can register an FIR online or by visiting the police station.

 6. Deactivate the SIM Card

If there is no response even after calling your number, then contact the service provider as soon as possible and suspend the SIM card.  With this your phone will not be found, but you will be able to save yourself from wrong use of your number.  Apart from this, if your bank wallet is linked with your mobile number then someone can also withdraw money from your account as OTP will come on your phone number only.

 7. Secure your online account

Not only email but your social network accounts are also important.  If the phone is stolen, anyone can easily access your social media account and pretend that you are using this account.  They can access your Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, everything.  To avoid this, change the passwords of all your accounts.

 8. Clean your smartphone using Android Device Manager or iCloud

If changing the password is not enough, you can unlink all cloud accounts manually.  Unlinking from Dropbox, Google Drive etc will stop the sync process and thus make your account more secure.
